Life Insurance

    The district pays for a Basic life insurance policy for you, at one times your annual salary with a minimum of $20,000 and maximum of $100,000.  Even if you don’t want to make any other changes, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your loved ones will have a benefit. Coverage can be elected in any $10,000 increment up to $500,000.00.  As a new hire, up to 3 times your annual salary is issued upon request.  This is your only opportunity to request life insurance without requiring an approval by the life insurance carrier. 

    Supplemental Plans are also available for your spouse and children. Your spouse may elect up to $50,000 with $25,000 guaranteed up request as a new hire.  Supplemental plans are also available for your spouse and children.  If you elect Supplemental Life Insurance, you are responsible for paying 100% of the benefit cost and deductions are taken from your paycheck in after-tax dollars.

    Requested increases for coverage for life insurance do not become effective until approved by The Hartford.  If you are required, you will receive an e-mail with instructions directly from medical.uw@hartfordlife.com  with a subject line of:  The Hartford Group Benefits: Evidence of Insurability Required.  The e-mail will be sent to your SPS e-mail address unless you typically receive notices from the Benefits Department via U.S. mail in which case you will receive correspondence from The Hartford to your home address within two weeks.

Long Term Disability

    • When an employee cannot work for an extended period of time due to a disability, Long Term Disability Insurance (LTD) can help cover a portion of an employee’s salary.

      Springfield Public Schools provides you with LTD Insurance through The Hartford. The plan covers you at 60% of your annual base salary, with a maximum benefit of $5,000 per month, for the first two years following an approved disability claim. This coverage is provided at no cost to you. Requested increases for coverage for long term disability insurance do not become effective until approved by The Hartford.
