Field Experiences (Student Teaching, Practicum and Internships)

Springfield Public Schools welcomes student teachers, practicum students, and counseling interns during the fall and spring semesters. Student teaching and counselor interning are an important phase in the development of future teachers and counselors. Springfield Public Schools welcomes colleges and universities to collaborate with our staff to train and nurture future educators.
After your college/university has made arrangements with SPS for you to be a student teacher or counseling intern, please follow the appropriate steps.

Practicum/Student Teacher Process

Complete the following steps AFTER you have been placed at a school. Be sure all requested information is completed prior to submission. This includes signatures of your university supervisor and the SPS teacher and principal from your placement school(s). Student Teacher Process & Information Sheet.
Step 1. Be fingerprinted for a criminal background check as a substitute.
Step 2. Apply for a substitute certification with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Step 3. Complete the Missouri Family Care Safety Registry Work Registration Procedures. You will want to choose “Voluntary Registrant” for worker type. There is a confirmation page after you register, you will need to send a copy of this to HR with your Social Security number written on the sheet.If you have already been added to the registry anytime in the past, you just need to complete the worker registration form and return it to HR with your other paperwork.
Step 4. Submit your fingerprint receipt or valid clearance letter and the FCSR Worker Registration Form to Springfield Public Schools, Human Resource Office, 1359 E. St. Louis Street Springfield, MO 65802.
School Counselor Internship Process

Contact SPS Director of Counseling, Alison Roffers , and request an application for placement (aroffers@spsmail.org or 417-523-0063). Once your placement has been approved, proceed with the following steps.
