Delaware - Progress as Promised

  • In April 2019, Springfield voters approved Proposition S which enables Springfield Public Schools to make facility improvements to a number of schools, including building a new Delaware Elementary School. SPS will invest $23.78 million to build this new school, which will serve 350 students. New construction will:

    • Address accessibility and security challenges
    • Provide a safe room gymnasium
    • Serve up to 350 K-5 students

     

Bond Update

Relocation of Students

  • Map Delaware to former Sherwood When school begins Aug. 13, 2019, Delaware students will temporarily relocate, during construction, to the former Sherwood Elementary School, 1813 S. Scenic Ave.  Free bus transportation will be provided for all Delaware students who currently live in the Delaware attendance area to the former Sherwood site.  Individuals attending Delaware on a transfer should contact the school office to find out more about transportation options.


     

General Updates

  • On Aug. 26, 2019, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to celebrate the beginning of construction on the new Delaware Elementary.


    Start and dismissal times will remain the same while students are temporarily relocated to former Sherwood site.


    During the summer, individuals living within the Delaware attendance area will receive a postcard with pick-up/drop-off information.


    An open house will be scheduled during the first week of August to allow parents to become familiar with the facility and to learn more about construction of the new building.


    Staff at the current Delaware facility will temporarily relocate to the former Sherwood site with students.


    When construction is complete, the Delaware boundary will shift to accommodate 80-100 students who currently attend Sunshine Elementary.

    The Board of Education approved change orders for installation of fire alarm annunciator and all-call microphone, wool insulation, wheels for bleachers. The purchase of audiovisual equipment was also approved.

    Construction contractor approved for Delaware

    Aug. 14, 2019

    During a special meeting Aug. 14, the Board of Education awarded a $15.4 million contract to Crossland Construction Co. for the construction of the new Delaware Elementary School. This contract brings the total construction cost for this project to $15.9 million. Cost for demolition and abatement work in the amount of $533,463 had been approved previously.
