Art Exhibit showcases student artistic talent in local galleries

  • IB Art Exhibit

Student artists will be featured in two downtown art galleries on Friday, April 6.

The 2018 International Baccalaureate Art Exhibit features two different collections of student works, curated, displayed and managed by international baccalaureate students, says Susan Brown. The art teacher has been supporting student artists with the IB Art Exhibit for more than a decade.

“Over the years, the IB Art Exhibit became a celebration of the creative work that students have been doing for, some of them, over two years,” she says. “In the past, we’ve even included drama and music. We even had poetry performed. It’s a celebration of the arts in our building.”

For the first time this year, Central IB portfolio instructor Bethany Kelly is overseeing students as they curate, coordinate and showcase their works in a gallery space.

“It’s important that their work is displayed in the community because it’s the community that supports them,” said Kelly. “A lot of the students are finding their inspiration in the community, and their community supports them in creating their work. There’s nothing greater than having that community see the work that our students have accomplished, and that sense of pride they feel.”

Springfield Public Schools is proud to offer the only K-12 International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum in the state of Missouri. As part of this success, students from Boyd, Field, Rountree, Pipkin and Central have a tradition of collaborating to present the community art, which demonstrates creativity, inspiration and originality.

The community is invited to attend both events on April 6.
