Our Focus: Meet Christian Cisneros, Head Custodian at Williams Elementary School.
Dec. 11, 2024
"I initially pursued the role of a custodian for Springfield Public Schools in order to have a set schedule the same as my two children: Christian J.R. (4 years old) and Frankie (2 years old). But wow, I did not realize what a great impact SPS would have on me. I feel like cleaning, and being proud of a clean school, reflects both the staff and students. That SPS Pride and ambition has made me the custodian I am today. From starting the first Williams Clean Club and having the honor to promote SPS through the SPS Ambassador program, I believe that being happy in your workplace makes a person want to spread that happiness to both staff and students (and a great way to get involved). Happiness is key.
I chose to be an SPS Staff Ambassador without even knowing if I could be one. I saw the recruitment email and figured, why not? Being an Ambassador is the type of role that I have always had a calling for -- to better inform my colleagues, students and the community of all the different programs and options readily available for both staff and students. There are so many opportunities at SPS all around us, and together, we can achieve anything we set our minds to.
I didn’t realize how greatly a custodian can impact both the life and achievements of students. These kids have grown on me in just a few short months, and most importantly, I want to see them succeed. I started what I call the Williams Clean Club, which consists of six students ranging from third to fifth grade. These students volunteer their time to help clean their school, after school, a couple of times a week. The club is not about cleaning, but to build confidence in themselves, respect one another and to set goals and achieve them not only today, but also in life. There’s such a sense of pride in a job well done, and the students get that every time they help make a difference.
The students at Williams are truly my motivation to want to excel through SPS. I wake up excited to come to work and make a difference. I love my job, and I love being Mr. C."
