Bus drivers are key to our students as they provide safe transportation each day. On the first Drop Everything and Read Day, bus drivers and bus attendants across the district showed up to read to the students who ride their bus.

Glenda Sharp has been a school bus driver for 22 years. She transports students each day who attend Watkins, Fremont and Reed. On Drop Everything and Read day, Glenda read to students in three classrooms – a kindergarten class, first-graders and a second and third grade split classroom.

“I retired three different times and finally, I asked myself, ‘Glenda, where were you most happy?’ So I came back to drive a school bus,” Glenda said. “I think it’s important for school bus drivers to get involved. It’s important for them to see bus drivers in a different setting.”

Lead Teacher Interventionist, Jodi Grable, asked Glenda to come and read. “We are really partnering with bus drivers to implement PBIS behaviors on their buses, because really, that’s an extension of our building,” Jodi said. “Bus drivers are helping us implement PBIS as students arrive at school and as they leave.”

Bus driver Alysa Urena chose to read to pre-K students at Campbell Early Childhood Center. Several students were excited to recognize their bus driver in their classroom.

“I currently pick up and drop off Campbell students, and having the opportunity to be their driver is one of the greatest perks of the job! I love being one of the first faces that these students see in the morning,” said Alysa. “Since they are preschoolers, I am able to ease their fears and getting them excited for school will always be a heartwarming experience for me.”
