York award

York Elementary School has been honored for the sixth consecutive year with a prestigious award from MO SW-PBS (Missouri Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support) for implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) with fidelity across all three tiers. This recognition highlights the school’s dedication to fostering a positive and conducive learning environment through the consistent application of PBIS strategies.

PBIS is a multi-tiered framework designed to promote and sustain positive behavior in schools. It is organized into three tiers, each serving different levels of student need:

  • Tier 1: Universal Support for All Students
This tier provides a foundation of preventive measures and positive reinforcements that benefit every student. It includes the establishment of school-wide expectations and routines that contribute to a positive school culture.

  • Tier 2: Targeted Supports for Some Students
This tier offers additional, targeted interventions for students who need more support beyond the universal strategies. These interventions help address specific behavioral challenges and prevent them from escalating.

  • Tier 3: Intensive Supports for a Few Students
The final tier involves highly individualized interventions for students with significant behavioral needs. These supports are often intensive and require close collaboration among educators, families, and sometimes external specialists.

At York Elementary, the PBIS team plays a crucial role in maintaining these supports. Meeting monthly, the team meticulously analyzes behavioral data to craft plans that provide teachers with necessary resources and professional learning opportunities. These efforts are closely aligned with the 8 Effective Teaching and Learning Practices outlined in the PBIS framework, ensuring that the strategies used are evidence-based and effective in improving student behavior.

"By maintaining a positive classroom environment, York Elementary continues to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed academically and socially," said Shondra Fetter, York principal. "This ongoing recognition from MO SW-PBS underscores our school's commitment to excellence in behavioral support and education for success-ready students."
