SPS United: Meet Tiffany Austin, Jeffries Elementary School Nurse.
July 10, 2024
“I worked for the hospital for 17 years. I was burnt out and looking for something that could bring joy to my life again. I have two children of my own who are 6 and 7 years old. I wanted to be able to be with my family more and have a job where I can find happiness in it each day. I am glad that I made the move to become a school nurse because I love working with kiddos and taking care of them like I would want my kids to be taken care of while at school.
At Jeffries, I made it a goal this year to get to know my students and their families more. I like to not only be the nurse, but also the one who can have fun, be a positive role model, and someone the students can look up to. I find ways to make learning about health fun and interesting. I like to dance with the kids, sing, laugh and give lots of high fives and hugs. I want them to know that they are safe with me, and they can trust me to take care of them.
As a school nurse, I use my best nursing judgment daily. I ask lots of questions, do thorough assessments and communicate with the students, staff and parents. I follow SPS guidelines and policies, and I know that each student is unique and will present differently. I feel it is key to educate the students on important matters such as good handwashing, eating healthy, exercising, and even the little things like properly blowing their nose. We are a team here at Jeffries, and it takes all of us to do our part to keep each other healthy.” - Tiffany Austin, Jeffries Elementary School Nurse
