The first day of school for Springfield Public Schools students is Aug. 19. To jump start preparations, SPS is inviting students and their families to a Back to School Bash Saturday, July 27, at the Springfield Expo Center, 635 E. St. Louis St.

From 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., families can access free groceries, backpacks, hygiene kits, immunizations and other resources, while supplies last. Lunch will also be served. The event is free and open to all SPS students and their families.

“The Back to School Bash is a celebration for our community and an opportunity for SPS to help students be success ready for the school year ahead,” explained Dr. Grenita Lathan, Springfield Public Schools superintendent. “We want families to come, enjoy themselves and have the opportunity to access resources that will help them be ready for the first day of school.”

About 24,500 SPS students will return to school Monday, Aug. 19.

The event will offer something for both children and their parents. There will be inflatables, a fire truck, hands-on stem projects, robotics and e-sports activities for children.

Parents can get help completing a free and reduced price meal application or talk with potential employers about job opportunities.

Other highlights include:

  • An appearance of the Kansas City Chiefs mascot, KC Wolf.
  • Door prizes and giveaways.
  • Power 96.5 Radio will be live onsite at the event.
