May 8, 2023

Volunteers of the Year

Nancy Henderson has served more than 100 hours volunteering at Bingham Elementary School just this year.

"This volunteer faithfully serves second- and third-graders in math and reading through the Reading Buddy Program," said Jessica Blake, coordinator of volunteers, community partnerships and public relations. "She volunteers at least two days a week, and Nancy has assisted many teachers and students throughout the building with any need. She has even come in for after-school activities for the families of Bingham."

Henderson was named the first ever SPS Volunteer of the Year at a special celebration May 4. The districtwide event recognized school volunteers of the year from a variety of schools, many who serve as Reading or Math Buddies with the Council of Churches for the Ozarks. In total, 96 Math and Reading Buddy Volunteers have supported 237 students with nearly 1,000 hours of time served.

That's why Council of Churches of the Ozarks Math and Reading Buddy Program received the Partner Volunteer Organization of the Year Award. Tina Miller accepted the award on behalf of more than a dozen Reading and Math Buddies at the celebration.

"When I look around, I see the heart of our volunteers," said Dr. Grenita Lathan, superintendent. "I see the individuals serving in the classroom, at home working on projects to support our teachers, on field trips and field days, in the lunchroom wiping down tables -- you're the driving force for so much that happens behind the scenes and we can't thank you enough."
