Hillcrest tennis coach Karen Fielding recognized by USTA
Nov. 30, 2022
Hillcrest High School tennis coach Karen Fielding was awarded the 2022 United States Tennis Association High School Coach of the Year award by the Missouri Valley USTA/Missouri District.
This award is given to the coach who “supports and promotes USTA programs; high school teams have a record of success in win-loss and/or in improvement of players; develops players’ physical, mental and emotional abilities and promotes development: maintains high ethical and sportsmanship standards; promotes a passion for tennis in the team, school and community.”
Fielding’s name was placed into nomination by the 2022 Nomination and Awards Committee and supported by Leah Clark. “Karen’s giving heart and compassion for others is evident upon first meeting her," Clark said. "This fact is what led her to take the Hillcrest position. Her love for Hillcrest is deeply rooted in her soul, having graduated, taught, coached and retired from Hillcrest."
When Coach Fielding heard the HHS girl's tennis program was in jeopardy without a coach, she wanted to take on the responsibility to keep it alive. "She has successfully created an environment for them to flourish as tennis players and young women. Karen is one of a kind,” Clark said.
"I spent most of my 35-year career teaching and coaching at Hillcrest, so it made a good fit. Giving back to the student athletes there has been an honor and an adventure. This is my 43rd year coaching for SPS, so I must be doing something correct," said Coach Fielding. "A huge 'thank you' to the USTA and Leah Clark. Their encouragement and support made a difference in what could be accomplished this past season. Receiving the USTA award is something I will cherish for years."
