State of the Schools celebrates success stories at SPS

Dr. Lathan shares State of the Schools address

Superintendent Grenita Lathan shared the State of the Schools address with the Springfield Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, Aug. 4. The annual address celebrated the superintendent's action plan, as well as success stories from every part of SPS.

"At Springfield Public Schools, your story is our story," said Dr. Lathan. "Our students, teachers, staff and community all have a unique story to tell, and together, they make the stories of Springfield Public Schools."

Highlights from the State of the Schools address:

  • 8 National Merit Finalists were recognized in early 2022
  • 139 students earned Industry Certifications
  • $25 million in scholarships earned by the Class of 2022
  • Wilson's Creek earned National Blue Ribbon honors and a Gold Star Award
  • SPS graduation rate is better than state and national averages
  • 21,600 free books were distributed to all K-1 students 
  • More than 1,000 students participated in the Clifford Reading Challenge this summer.
  • The district had a 32 percent reduction in energy costs
  • More than 4 million meals were distributed by Student Nutrition
