Meet Armando Johnson, Spanish teacher and equity champion at Central High School

Q: “There are many ways to teach world languages. How would you describe the way you teach Spanish?”

A: “I try to be innovative in teaching by reaching every student in a way that appeals to their individual learning style. I incorporate technology into my daily lessons to ensure that they are ready for the continual growth of our technological society. In order to reach the kinesthetic learners, I learned American Sign Language and began using it as a means to teach Spanish. This has helped re-ignite my teaching because my student engagement has increased exponentially. I also work to increase cultural knowledge of our Caribbean Spanish-speaking neighbors in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Cuba, who generally do not receive a lot of attention in the traditional Spanish class."
