A Message on Equity & Inclusivity

Equity Message

To Our Community:

Over the last few months, we have experienced a series of disturbing events that have impacted our students, staff, parents and community. These racist and bigoted actions, targeted at our students, specifically African American and LGBTQ students, represent opposition to basic human rights and to a learning environment defined by inclusivity and respect for every individual.

The message from Springfield Public Schools is clear: We are in this together; we will not tolerate racism, bigotry or disrespect in any form; and we will speak out against inappropriate behavior and take necessary action in support of our students at every opportunity. Board of Education policy outlines the district’s prohibition of discrimination, harassment and retaliation, while also defining all forms of bullying. The district’s discipline scope and sequence clearly states the consequences for conduct in violation of these policies.

The most recent actions remind us that much more work is needed to break down barriers in our schools and community so that every student feels safe and welcomed. As leaders of Springfield Public Schools, we are committed to this important work. We stand with our community partners, including the NAACP, to evaluate our current efforts and expand our outreach to better serve and protect students of all backgrounds. Our commitment to this work includes a promise of regular community engagement that encourages listening, idea sharing and collaboration with clear timelines that include actionable steps.

The current, ongoing work to improve equity within Springfield Public Schools is focused on curriculum, culture, community engagement, student support and staff development. The programs, initiatives and strategies underway are summarized at www.sps.org/equity. Furthermore, the district’s Strategic Plan is aligned to identify and measure progress in closing the gaps for under-resourced and under-represented students - specifically as it relates to academic achievement, learning supports, graduation outcomes and discipline.

While these districtwide efforts are making a positive difference, we acknowledge that more work is needed. In the coming months, SPS will take the following actions:

  • Additional diversity training will be provided to all teachers and district leaders, beginning in August 2019.
  • The creation of a diversity work team is underway to direct ongoing equity work. Regular meetings will begin in the next few months.

We pledge our continued work, in collaboration with our community, for the benefit of every learner, every day. This is a fundamental, ongoing priority for SPS.
