Parkview has a rich tradition in orchestral music. This level of excellence is demonstrated through accolades such as being selected to perform for the Missouri Music Educators Association (MMEA) and “1” ratings at large ensemble competitions. There are two orchestras at Parkview. The concert orchestra is a non-auditioned orchestra and serves as a foundation for the entering freshmen. As students’ abilities progress they have the opportunity to audition for advanced orchestra. This varsity-level performing group is limited in size and strives to incorporate solid technical skills with high levels of musicianship and artistry. The concert orchestra and advanced orchestra meet on alternating days. Daily rehearsal goes into preparation for performances. The orchestra performs a Holiday Concert and Spring Concert. In conjunction with the drama department students have the opportunity to participate in the pit orchestra for the fall musical theatre production. This is a limited size group and affords a unique playing experience. Each year there are various competitions and festivals in which students can participate. The first semester students can audition to participate in the all-state orchestra. Later in the spring, solo and ensemble festival and large ensemble competitions take place. PHS has been well represented in these various competitions. The Parkview orchestra program, along with the vocal and band programs make up one of the strongest in the state. This demonstration of leadership consistently serves as an anchor of excellence at Parkview High School.
