PHS senior Alissa Schilling wins the State Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs
Congratulations to Parkview High School senior, Alissa Schilling, for her selection to represent Missouri for the State Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield. Schilling was honored in February as the 2020 Springfield Youth of the Year, and now she will represent the Midwest at the regional competition this summer. She will join the Youth of the Year winners from 12 states and the winner will receive a $20,000 college scholarship.
As part of her selection as Youth of the Year for Springfield, Alissa received $16,000 in scholarships from the Boys & Girls Club and an additional $16,000 from Missouri State University. The state competition added two scholarships to her education fund: $1,000 from Missouri Area Council and $2,500 from Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Now, she is registered at MSU to attend college in the fall.
“To say that I am proud of Alissa is an understatement. She is resilient. She is smart. She is diligent. She has worked so hard to become the person she is today,” said Brandy Harris, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield. “She attributes many Springfield Public School teachers and Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield staff members for her success, but we know much of what she has accomplished in her life is because of her own tenacity and tireless commitment to never giving up."
Harris said, "I have seen what Springfield Public Schools can do for students. I am a product of it. Teachers, counselors, and staff do not simply teach curriculum or enter grades or help determine class schedules or write responses on essays. It is so much more than that. Many of them become warriors for their students. They support, they listen, they provide guidance, and they believe in their students so much that those students believe in themselves too. That's one of the greatest gifts you could ever give to someone."
