Edison Universe recognizes innovation of two GO CAPS students
GO CAPS is designed to give students real-life experiences in careers that they might pursue in the future. Started by Springfield Public Schools in partnership with a number of regional districts and the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, the cooperative program provides hands-on, engaging learning experiences for high schoolers in a variety of fields.
For two GO CAPS students, the program gave them the opportunity to identify a problem and create a solution that could save Mercy Hospital as much as $200,000 a year.
This innovative solution earned John Holtzman and Joseph Jedlicka, both 2018 Nixa High School graduates, the Edison Universe Fold Award.
Edison Universe sponsors a contest that allows students participating in Center for Advanced and Professional Studies (CAPS) programs to showcase innovations they have created and the opportunity to win scholarships.
John and Joseph's solution helped improved the blood draw process at Mercy blood bank, which will decrease the incidents of redraw, save time and money and improve patient care.
As part of their award, John and Joseph each received a $1,000 scholarship. John will attend University of Missouri-Kansas City medical school where he will pursue his goal of becoming a surgeon. Joseph will attend Truman State University in the fall where he plans to study physical therapy.
