Principal, partners and PTA build new deck at Holland Elementary
Before the end of the school year, there will be many firsts on the new deck at Holland Elementary School. The first classroom photo, the first teacher reading, the first learning activity -- the possibilities of the new outdoor space are endless, says Holland principal Gary Tew.
“It’s another space for our kids and teachers to go and get away from the traditional classroom setting”, said Tew. “It’s an outdoor space nestled in our calm and peaceful courtyard. Now, we’re able to take a whole class outside for outdoor learning activities such as gardening and working in nature. It’s truly a great space for all.”
Principal Tew and a crew of eight men from South Haven Baptist Church built the 20 foot by 20 foot deck in a single Saturday, starting the day with donated McDonald’s breakfast at 7 a.m.
The school’s Parent Teacher Association raised $2,500 for the deck, and The Deck Company provided consulting support for the work, ordering materials and providing feedback on the structural integrity of the finished deck. The Deck Company and Southaven Baptist Church are two Holland Partners in Education, coordinated by Holland secretary Michelle Peak.
“Ms. Peak is awesome at getting volunteers and keeping and organizing our faith partners involved,” said Tew. “Her neighbor owns The Deck Company, and they donated their time as well to the project. It’s just an amazing space for our school, and I’m excited to see how it’s used.”
