A 53-year late library book has finally been returned to the school library
Oct. 31, 2025

It’s always important to return one’s library books, even if it’s been late for more than 50 years.
On Oct. 22, 2025, a package arrived at the Parkview High School library. Inside was “A Little Treasury of Love Poems,” a book that was checked out from the school library in 1972 and never returned — until now.
Along with the book was a note from the borrower, Jayna Potter Ross, that read:
“I checked out this book in May 1972. I know it is in rough shape and hope it can still be used. I should have returned it sooner and I apologize for my negligence.”
The current Parkview librarians were filled with joy when they read the note. They promptly reached out to Jayna to thank her for returning the book and giving everyone a good laugh.
“What a delight to receive your library book, just a tad overdue,” said Librarian Susan Mann in her email to Jayna. “It made so many staff members and students happy to see your note and returned book. More than one person said ‘Oh! That gives me goosebumps!’ This is a wonderful piece of Parkview history returned to us, and it feels precious.”
Mann plans to use the book as an example to her students that books can be found, even if they've been checked out a while. A plan Jayna was happy to hear.
“I am embarrassed that it took me so long to right a wrong, but better late than never,” said Jayna.
This whole situation just goes to show that wrongs can be righted and once a Viking, always a Viking.
