Federal rebate program supports energy efficiency and sustainability

Oct. 22, 2025

Springfield Public Schools has been awarded $4.1 million in federal funding through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) Direct Pay program to support groundbreaking geothermal projects developed by Veregy. These projects will provide long-term energy efficiency, reduce operating costs and advance districtwide sustainability goals while providing healthier, more comfortable learning environments for Springfield students.

Veregy, the project developer for these initiatives, used state-of-the-art engineering, construction, and clean energy expertise to help SPS make these infrastructure upgrades. The IRA Direct Pay program allowed SPS to invest in efficient and reliable clean energy technologies at Disney and Sequiota elementary schools and Carver Middle School.

“By partnering with Veregy, SPS is not only able to reduce energy and operating costs but improve sustainability, which results in better stewardship of taxpayer resources and enhanced learning and working environments for students and staff,” explained Dr. Travis Shaw, deputy superintendent of operations.

Veregy representatives marked the partnership by presenting a ceremonial check to Superintendent Grenita Lathan and Dr. Shaw Oct. 22.
