Kickapoo brings marketing and business lessons to life with spirit store

April 23, 2025

Kickapoo High School is turning school spirit into real-world learning with the launch of a new in-house spirit store, managed and operated by students.

On April 17, Kickapoo celebrated the opening of its spirit store with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the school’s main entrance. The store is stocked with Kickapoo clothing, water bottles, stickers, pins and other merchandise.

Kickapoo principal Dr. Bill Powers emphasized the collective effort it took to open the storefront.

“This has been a wonderful collaboration between our students, staff, community and SPS, and we’re excited to finally open the doors,” Dr. Powers said. “This is a space built for students, and we couldn’t be prouder.”

Students began planning for the spirit store long before the ribbon was cut. As part of their marketing and business curriculum, they developed branding for the store, researched products and developed a budget. They also created social media accounts for the store and advertised the grand opening.

“This store will serve as a place where students and families can purchase spirit wear and other supplies, but it will also provide hands-on learning experiences for Kickapoo students,” said superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan at the ribbon cutting. “This isn’t just a store – it’s a classroom.”

With the spirit store social media accounts, students are gaining experience in graphic design, marketing, content creation and digital strategies. In the store, they learn about customer service and sales.

Opening the spirit store aligns with Strategic Plan Governing Priority 1 by developing success-ready students and providing real-world educational opportunities.

“When we engage, support and inspire students through experiences like these, we are preparing them for their careers and opening doors to their future,” said Dr. Lathan.
