Inaugural class of graduates celebrated at Fly SPS graduation

April 11, 2025

Six SPS seniors were celebrated and cleared for takeoff at the Inaugural Fly SPS Graduation Ceremony on April 10 at the General Aviation Terminal, Midwest Premier.

For the past two years, the six graduates have spent half their school day at the Springfield-Branson National Airport, learning about different career paths in aviation, utilizing flight simulators and pursuing their private pilot’s license.

At the ceremony, students heard from Brian Weiler, director of aviation for the Springfield-Branson National Airport, and Dr. Matt Hudson, executive dean of career, technical and community development for Ozarks Tech. Dr. Grenita Lathan, superintendent of Springfield Public Schools, also shared a few words.

“When we began this program, we had hopes that it would turn out to be an educational experience for a few outstanding students who were interested in aviation,” said Dr. Lathan. “I’m pleased to say that Fly SPS, and its students, have exceeded all of our expectations. Graduates, your dedication, determination and passion have made this program truly special.”

The graduates received a Fly SPS stole that they will wear at their school’s graduation on May 17.

SPS is the only school in Missouri to offer an aviation program to high school students, and students participate at no cost to them or their families. Several of the students will be continuing their aviation education in college.
