SPS Executive Director of Elementary Learning to Retire

Dr. J. Anderson to Retire

Dr. J. Anderson, executive director for Springfield Public Schools, will retire from public education, effective June 30, 2022, after 28 years of dedicated service.

During his 24 years with SPS, Dr. Anderson has served as an elementary teacher, assistant principal of Pepperdine and Shady Dell schools, principal of Truman Elementary and Campbell Elementary, and executive leader of all elementary education. In his current role for Missouri’s largest school district, Dr. Anderson oversees educational opportunities for 12,000 early childhood and elementary students by leading the supervision, development and support of all early childhood and elementary principals and 580 teachers across 37 sites.

“Dr. Anderson has dedicated his heart to serving our district and he deserves all the best as he prepares for a well-deserved retirement,” said Dr. Nicole Holt, deputy superintendent of operations. “J.’s steadfast leadership has impacted the lives of countless individuals over the years, and he will be missed by all of us.”

In 2009, Dr. Anderson was named a National Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and has served in leadership capacities with professional organizations, including as president of the Missouri Association of Elementary Principals (MAESP). He completed his undergraduate work in elementary education at Missouri State University, graduate work in educational leadership at Northern Arizona University, a specialist in education degree from Missouri State University, and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy analysis from the University of Missouri.

“I’m simply blessed and grateful to be an educator,” said Dr. Anderson. “Schools are magical places to me. They provide a child an environment rich with learning experiences and a caring adult who impacts the trajectory of their life. SPS has been my work home for most of my career and I have loved the opportunity to serve.”
