MSU athletes read to kids

Springfield Public Schools celebrated Read Across America Day with our friends from Missouri State University (MSU) as they visited elementary schools across the district to read to students.
National Education Association’s (NEA) Read Across America is considered the United States’ largest celebration of reading. In addition to year-round promotion of reading, Read Across America Day on March 2 celebrates reading at all ages, with special reading challenges for young readers.
Read Across America Day coincides with Dr. Seuss Day, celebrating Theodor Seuss Geisel’s birthday. With this double celebration, many classrooms specifically picked out Dr. Seuss books for their guest readers.
“I just love them,” said Lily Patterson, MSU women’s soccer player and guest reader at Westport K-8, as she exited a fourth-grade classroom.

While celebrating reading, the connection between SPS students and MSU athletes built strong relationships and community. In addition to the reading, SPS students got to ask the athletes questions, talk about their experiences and a couple MSU football players even joined a kindergarten classroom at Jeffries Elementary School for a brain break.

SPS will continue to invest in and celebrate reading with Drop Everything and Read Day on Thursday, March 5.
