First graders explore local animals at the nature center

 

Foxes, birds and snakes — oh my! Explore first grade students learned all about Missouri animals at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center. 

A representative from the Missouri Department of Conservation taught the students all about reptiles, mammals and birds that are native to southwest Missouri. The students learned how to identify the different types of animals — who have scales, fur or feathers. They even got to touch and feel a turtle shell, turkey feathers and a fox pelt during the presentation. At the end of the visit, students got to pet a live snake held by the presenter. 

These kinds of activities and learning opportunities are a testament to the power of partnership and community in education. Thanks to the support of the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Springfield Conservation Nature Center, SPS students enjoyed this zoology experience.
