Fifth graders celebrate their next step

Students stand on the floor looking up at bleachers where their family is cheering for them.

As the kindergarteners wrap up their first school year and the seniors are graduating, another student milestone is taking place as the fifth graders celebrate the end of their elementary education and prepare for middle school.

Several schools held a special ceremony to celebrate their fifth grade advancements. These events often included a clap-out hallway walk, student performances and memory slideshows that brought tears to the proud parents’ eyes.

At Holland Elementary, students performed a musical rendition of “Try Everything” from the film Zootopia, which included several students performing both vocally and through American Sign Language. Following that, the principal named Honesty Davis and Haric Cruz Holland Hawks of the Year for their character and contributions to the school community. Then each fifth grader got a special acknowledgment from their teachers and had their moment in the spotlight.

This transition from elementary to middle school is significant. For many this means moving to a whole new building. Even for those in a K-8 school, the way they will attend classes is about to change as students learn to move classrooms for different subjects and be taught by a team of teachers rather than staying with one for a whole year. These fifth grade promotion ceremonies are a special way to mark this important moment in their educational journey and remind them that no matter where they go, they will always have the love and support of their elementary school family.
