Secondary Science

Goals:

Goal 1: The district will support the implementation of the guaranteed and viable curriculum by providing high quality instructional materials  and ongoing professional learning aligned to evidence based best practice.

Goal 2: Teachers will implement district curriculum to support student sense-making that provides all students with opportunities to investigate and generate scientific explanations of phenomena observed in the world around them.

Goal 3: Students, actively engaged in inquiry-based learning, will critically analyze information sources, evaluate evidence, and construct well-reasoned scientific arguments based on reliable data.

5E Learning Cycle

Individual science lessons and activities are taught using the 5E learning cycle.

The 5E learning cycle allows students to develop an understanding through engagement and exploration.  These experiences allow students  to understand the concept, even define it, before a term is presented.  This gives students the opportunity to "discover" the concepts on their own and experiences to connect the terms to once they are introduced. Students can then elaborate, or apply, the new concepts to related phenomena for a deeper understanding.
