About the Program

The Academy of Fine and Performing Arts (AFPA) provides a unique learning program designed for 5th grade students who are passionate about the arts and eager to develop their creative talents. Through an engaging, arts-integrated curriculum, students explore visual arts, theater, music, dance, and creative expression while continuing to master grade-level academic standards. AFPA is built around four core values: Academic Rigor, Creativity, Teamwork, and Safety/Service. Students engage in challenging academic learning while developing their artistic abilities through hands-on experiences, performances, and collaborative projects. The program encourages students to think creatively, work effectively with others, and contribute positively to their school and community. Students learn by creating, collaborating, questioning, and reflecting—using the arts as both a lens for understanding the world and a vehicle for demonstrating learning. These experiences help students build confidence, communication skills, leadership, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts. Enrollment in AFPA is available through Springfield Public Schools' CHOICE application process. Admission is determined through a lottery process when the number of applicants exceeds program capacity.
